Fried grasshopper

I got a special package from overseas. Can you guess where its from?

Orthoptera is the order of insects that includes grasshoppers, crickets, and locust. They happen to be the only insect considered kosher in Judaism.
Two pairs of wings, mandibulate mouthparts, thorax, large compound eyes, antennae, long hind legs... Yes, they can all be found in this little can.

Tasting notes:
They were very light on the seasonings and salt, but it was perfect. I think peanut oil was used to fry them. They were seasoned before frying, or it's possible the oil was seasoned, which made it hard to narrow in on what spices were used. Tastes of smoked red pepper and subtle coriander aroma. Overall crunchy, but not loud. The thorax and head were a bit flaky but not dry. The legs were hollow for the most part, and made a nice eye candy when picking for them. All and all, a very tasty treat.

I had these on their own, but would pair well as a topping on a lightly dressed salad, or even sprinkled over some white rice. They went perfect with a New Castle Brown Ale. The tastes of fruity dark malt and ice tea in the beer complimented the fried grasshoppers perfectly.

Gross factor: At first, I was slightly nervous... as these are treats directly from and made in Thailand. After my first bite I was fine.
